Remember when you thought that liquor ads in magazines had weird subliminal messaging with the word s*x spelled out in the ice cubes? I remember poring over those prints looking for it but never detected a thing. I never could find damn Waldo either. And those posters that you stare at to see another image or something 3D thing pop out at you? Yeah, those don’t work for me either. This is my not-so-subliminal link to my Avon Breast Cancer Walk fundraising page: http://www.avonwalk.org/goto/ilinap
On to the cocktail…(Bird is learning about the ellipsis in his second grade writer’s workshop. I bet his teacher would commend my usage of the …)
Let me start by telling you that I don’t like soda. I’ve never been a big fan, which is OK because my big brother drinks enough of it to compensate for my share. I do keep some soda on hand for guests and for use in my 5:00 Fridays experimentation. The only soda I truly can’t turn down is a frosty root beer served in a frosty mug. Mac Daddy and I are partial to one we had from Sprecher, an awesome brewery in Wisconsin. We lived there when Wisconsin was a bastion of progressive ideology. I hear the state is now contemplating an Arizonaesque immigration law. Wow, just not the same place I know and love. We also have a friend who collects root beer memorabilia (Everyone’s gotta have a hobby!) and have oohed and aahed over his prize barrels and bottles and such. He even scoured the classifieds and outfitted his basement like a 1950s soda fountain, right down to the red and white tilt-a-whirl booths. All this in the days before E was baying and Craig was listing. Anyway, the Union has a nifty little cocktail that is right up my alley.
2 oz Vanilla Vodka (I prefer Stoli.)
Root beer
Marty: I don’t think I’m entered.
Vince: A knockout like you? What’s your name?
Marty: Marty.
Vince: Marty what?
Marty: Maraschino. You know, as in cherry.
Please come make a toast with me and spread the word! I hope to share the joy of 5:00 Friday with you!

Hey, have you ever tried acid phosphate? I read a great article in The Atlantic about how it really gives a drink oomph and now I want to try it. Problem is I can only find it on one Canadian site and shipping’s high. Let me know if you try it and use it in one of your drinks!
