When I was a little girl I wanted to be President when I grew up. After Mrs. O’Neal squashed that idea I decided I’d be a pediatric surgeon instead. Then I bombed chemistry. Then physics. Then calculus. Med school was not to be. I grew up to be a marketer and a wannabe writer. Sure, I’m a mom too, but I don’t count that as a job as much as a privilege, an honor, an experience.
It’s amazing to me how many different jobs there are in this world. Just think of the inner workings and underbellies of places like the airport, trash dump, and chain grocery store. Nevermind the mind boggling logistical craziness that is supply chain management. I know my share of doctors, lawyers, nurses, teachers, and professions that come in the form of LEGO people and Playmobil toys. But everyday I am reminded that there are plenty of people who do weird, interesting, unheard of jobs in this world. I was first aware of this the summer after I graduated college when I met Tom Wolfe’s nanny. I had always been a giant Tom Wolfe fan so imagine my wide eyed star struck gasp when I learned this information from the girl I had spent all summer doing oyster shooters with.
Neither Mac Daddy nor I do anything particularly wacky for a living that makes for riveting cocktail party conversation. Usually once I start talking about blogging, writing, marketing with my airline seatmate I see the bubble cloud over his head reading blahdee blah blah blah. You should see the looks I get at networking events or my husband’s work function when I tell people I stay him with my sons.
I’m beginning to feel the itch to try something new, do something daring, or simply be someone riveting. If only for a bit.
I’ve been thinking about what I’d like to do when I grow up. Here’s my top 10 list.
10) Pie taste tester
9) Professional dinner party guest/conversationalist
8) Dean & Deluca buyer
7) LEGO play set designer (I love LEGO but boy am I tired of the uber movie merchandised, testosteroney sets!)
6) Playmobil catalog set designer
5) Model for petite size dresses and clothes for short women who are neither frumpy nor starving
4) Shoe tester
3) Travel, food, cocktail writer
2) Talk show host a la Ellen
1) OPI nail polish color namer
So tell me, what do you want to be when you grow up?
LZ says
Ugh. I have NO idea what I want to be. Since everyone tells me that I’ll be even busier when my kids are in school full-time, I wonder how much sense it even makes to think about it seriously. In an ideal world? Photographer, party planner, professional sleeper, cereal tester. Any of the above 🙂

Like your #1, I want to be the person who names paint colors for Sherwin-Williams and names the streets in new subdivisions.
Also, I’ll join LZ on the cereal testing. Have MUCH experience for that one.
Erin Lane says
Oooh cereal taste tester?? I am ALL over that one.
I would also be happy to help Keurig pick out new pod flavors/coffees.
Currently, I’m going for a reality show host gig a la Cat Deeley from So You Think You Can Dance.
