My good friend Will lost his dad this week. He was of a rare ilk who warmly looked you in the eye, made you feel special and important, and indelibly left his imprint on everyone he met.
On the very day Will’s dad died, just hours later as a matter of fact, my niece gave birth to her first child. A baby girl, who shares a name with her grandmother who died much too young.
Sometimes the Universe whispers in faint breaths that we cannot hear. Sometimes it chimes a gentle reminder of its existence. This week, the Universe trembled and shook and heaved as it bellowed to us, a nod to the world behind us and before us.
I toast to a life lost, a life born, and lives they both touch.
The Universe
1 ounce Lillet
1 ounce Blume Marillen Apricot Eau de Vie (an Austrian apricot brandy of sorts, in honor of Will’s dad’s heritage)
3 ounces orange juice
teeny tiny ever-so-slight splash of bitters
Add ingredients to a cocktail shaker filled with ice. Give it a shake. Strain into a martini glass. Garnish with an orange twist.
Cheers to everyone who makes your universe a better place!
