We are crossing the line in the sand that demarcates the lazy days of summer and the bustle of school days. We are all approaching this line in Chariots of Fire style, slow motion with an ever so slight sense of urgency. Bird, Deal, and I agree that this summer has been particularly speedy. We have been true to our family MO of not overscheduling and have enjoyed many laid back days. We even took a nap yesterday! After Deal and I saw Bird snoozing on the couch we decided to read a story and get some shut eye ourselves. What decadence! I told the boys that was my favorite day of the whole summer. We should all enjoy the luxury of a nap.
The end of summer means that fall’s bounty is soon to be unearthed. Before I dig into root vegetables and pumpkins, I have to get my hands on some more peaches. Mac Daddy brought us a gazillion peaches from a recent trip to South Carolina. Fresh, local peaches in season are simply heavenly. My boys can eat them for three meals a day and never tire of the drippy nectar plopping onto their shirts. I managed to stow away a couple fresh peaches to use them in a delightfully grown up way. My friend Gail, who is pretty amazing and talented, has been on a gin kick and sucked me in too. Summer is gin season for me so I might as well wrap up the season with a few of my favorite things.
Peachy Keen Summer
1 ounce Bombay Sapphire gin
6 ounces prosecco
2 slices of fresh peach
1 peach slice for garnish
Muddle fresh peach slices and gin in a cocktail shaker. Strain into a champagne flute. Top with prosecco. Add a fresh peach slice for garnish, because you know, a dazzle of summer color makes everything more festive.
Cheers to summer’s end and peachy keen days ahead!
