When the North Carolina summers start scorching the soles of our bare feet when we run off the porch to grab the morning paper, I know it’s going to be a battle to cajole my boys to come with me to walk the dog. Hell, even the dog doesn’t want to go out. On these days I like to whip up a treat or reach for a popsicle to entice my boys. They enjoy a frozen treat melting down their wrists and making them stickier than they normally are on any given day cooling them from the inside out. I squeeze in a quick walk around the block with nary a meltdown, lest you count the aforementioned popsicle.
Today I was eying a bottle of pomegranate limeade and was wondering what I would whip up for me and Deal as we walked Lark during the hottest part of the day. I decided to blend it with some ice and ginger ale for a refreshing treat. My boys rarely get soda so this was a nice way to spoil my Deal on the next to last day of summer while Bird was at the pool with a friend. We sipped and walked, the whole while I thought to myself how yummy this concoction would be with a splash of rum.
And so ladies and gentlemen, today’s 5:00 Fridays was born.
Walkin’ the Dog in Heat
2 cups of ice
2 cups of pomegranate limeade
3/4 can of gingerale
1 ounce of light rum per drink
Add ice, pomegranate limeade, and ginger ale to a blender and pulse until it’s a slushy consistency. Pour into glass and add rum (um, let me be clear, NO RUM for the under 21 set!). Give it a gentle swish with a straw to mix in the rum. Sip, sigh, repeat. Call a designated driver.
