I’m not a rum girl. Never have been. I’m more a gin girl, actually. Somehow gin and the tropics don’t mix, so on a recent trip to Puerto Rico I opted do as in Rome, so to speak. I mean really, I realize Rome is not Puerto Rico. I’m speaking figuratively here.
On a jaunt to Old San Juan we happened upon a lovely little local place. We were pleased to hear no English spoken at the surrounding tables. We had serendipitously stumbled upon a local joint. We settled in for a nosh and a cold beverage. OMG, the ceviche! The mussels! The scallops! The sardines! Lord, the sardines!
The boys were parched from walking through the nooks and crannies of the forts and gulped down ice water. Mac Daddy and I opted for a local beer. Natch.
And then I saw this.
The bartender smiled in a cheeky yet inviting way when I inquired about the arctic grape rum. I’m not one to know about horticulture, but grapes don’t grow in the arctic, do they? In any case, the bartender raved about the new grape rum and whipped up an ever so delectable refreshment. Look at that lovely smile on the bartender. She wouldn’t steer a girl wrong. That is a trustworthy face who knows her way around an open air bar.
San Juan Serendipity
3 ounces Bacardi Arctic Grape Rum
4-6 ounces homemade lemonade
Fill a tall glass with ice. Add rum. Top with lemonade. It’s that simple and so dang tasty. Seriously, my first thought after sip number one was, “Ooh, this is going to be a 5:00 Fridays post!” And then Mac Daddy proceeded to finish my drink.
