I have always wanted to go to the Kentucky Derby. A financial advisor colleague in Louisville invited me once eons ago, but he was a sexist creep so I declined. I fondly recall the Foxfield Races in my hometown. Fun was had by all, and we never saw a horse. Let’s just say there was lots of horsing around. Ahem. I always figured the Foxfield Races were a precursor to the Derby. Back in the day I donned floral Laura Ashley and sipped on Virginia Gentleman with a bow tie clad Virginia gentleman at my side. My tastes have improved. I broke up with Laura Ashley. I prefer Makers Mark. I married a guy from Wisconsin.
I have yet to go to the Kentucky Derby.
What I really want is a fancy hat.
I also want to sip on a mint julep and hear the sound of thundering horses tromp by. I want to bet on horses with ridiculous names. I want to meet a grown man short enough to dance cheek to cheek with me.
Alas, I’ll be home crafting a homemade crepe paper hat. I’m going to have to mix my own julep. And I don’t have an excuse to buy a new dress. Sigh.
Mint Julep (This would be my horse’s name had I a thoroughbred in the race.)
2 ounces simple syrup
handful of fresh mint leaves
2 ounces Makers Mark
splash of water
Gently muddle simple syrup and fresh mint. Fill a glass with lightly crushed ice (not slushie-like, but not large cubes). Add Makers Mark and water. Give it a stir. Top with more ice and water if you are a wimp like I am. Aw, go for extra simple syrup too. Garnish with fresh mint sprigs. Pinkies out!
