There’s been a lot of chatter in the media about helicopter parenting and raising kids with empathy. It seems we have upon us a generation of entitled kids who don’t know how to cope or feel or dare I say, behave. Mac Daddy and I have always believed we are raising adults, not children. The vernacular is all wrong, right?
We are family that believes in giving back, speaking out, and taking action. Oh, it admittedly comes with its challenges. Our sons are no saints so there is plenty of bickering and whining when we embark on a volunteer project. Most of the time the boys are good natured, and they come out enlightened every single time. Every time we give back, there’s something to take in.
I wrote a piece for the Global Moms Challenge about engaging kids to take action. It’s a privilege to work with my son’s class and teachers. As a society we tend to discount children’s voices, but the real gold lies in what they have to say.
