The end of the school year is a frenzied, rushed race with summer monotony bleating at the finish line. Each year is a bittersweet end, and I have visions of family time adventures and cookie baking as we laugh and dance in the kitchen. Mind you, this is still a wistful daydream that has yet to come to fruition. But a mom can dream…
The things I worry about, mostly endless sibling bickering and overlooked dog poop in the yard, pale in comparison to what many moms face during the summer break. One thing that never worries me is how I will feed my kids. We have an abundance of riches in our pantry, and the fridge is always stocked. We want for nothing. I don’t take that for granted.
I worry about the children who don’t get school meals during the summer months. Many hardworking families rely on these meals. If only our school district had the resources to provide summer meals. If only our state legislature provided adequate resources to schools and children in general… But that’s another story. No school means no meals to 300,000 in central and eastern North Carolina. Just one dollar can help stop summer hunger.
- A donation of $35 will feed a child for two months.
- A donation of $75 will feed a family of four for one month.
- A donation of $150 will feed a family of four for two months.
Help reach the goal of 3.3 million meals before July 31 and ensure that children in our community receive the daily, nutritious meals they need to grow healthy and strong. What we take for granted is commensurate to what we give back. My kids are sick of me saying that, yet it applies to myriad situations. Consider a lemonade stand to benefit the Central and Eastern North Carolina Food Bank. Host a virtual food drive, hold a food drive in your office, or just donate the cost of one latte a week to help feed children.
For every dollar donated, the food bank can provide five meals. Now that is the best deal of the summer.
