In my estimation, there’s never been a time more than now that the world needs hope and peace and encouragement. I live down the hill from an elementary school, so the sounds of encouragement ring through my windows as the classes roll through recess each day. The giggles and yelps are my fuel as I click away on my keyboard on my porch. In my years of tutoring and chaperoning, I find that I continue to learn more from the children than any wisdom I might impart to them. My own two sons underscore this every single day.
With my son’s permission, I’m sharing a bit of his childhood wisdom. Deal, my 10-year old, wrote this poem for school. It was taped into his writing notebook, and these simple words might just be the fuel you need to champion making the world a more peaceful, compassionate place.
Smart, creative, and cool
Loverof cold ice cream
Who is able to build
Who feels mad about bad laws
Who wonders what made space
Who fears big crowds
Who would like to be famous
Who dreams of changing the world
