Some of you might have a Bucket List. I tried that once. I had naively written down “run a 5k.” Clearly that is not on brand for me so I threw out the whole list and went back to find the real Ilina. I decided that a bucket list is a bit too grim for my taste. I prefer to call it a wish list or a to-do list. Alas, I don’t need to write down that stuff. I carry it in my heart. One time I did, however, write down my Unbucket List.
What this last year of living in a pandemic has taught me is that I need to focus on my F*%# it List. I’m going to be like what’s-her-name in Frozen and let it go. This is going to do wonders for my mental health, and there’s no guilt (and no aches and pains like running a damn 5k). Rather than leaving me breathless, adopting these steps from my F*%# It list will give me life.
Join me on this journey to stick up your middle finger to all the things that suck our souls. What would you include on your list?
Conforming
Pleasing the haters
Kowtowing to the comfort of white fragility
Buying into the notion of beach body
Fitting into my size 2 pants
Obsessing about the lines on my forehead
Wearing uncomfortable heels
Putting myself last
Finishing a book I’m not enjoying
Passing on dessert
Setting unreasonable standards, be it high or low
Wearing a bra when I’m not going to see anyone
Fighting rest to make way for busyness
Settling
Tolerating complacency and complicity
Celebrating colonization
Making excuses for others
Putting off joy and indulgence
