Summer is winding down. The lazy days shall soon part to make way for schedules and homework and piano lessons. The frequently flexible bedtimes will be but a distant memory as 8:00 will be lights out again soon. Backpacks will be full of papers to sign and forms to complete. Oh, the deluge of paper signals the start of a school year like nothing else. Our relaxing evenings will shuffle to errands and lunch packing. Bird and Deal will come home with new tales, new friends, and new experiences. With that comes new challenges. Gone are the physical demands of parenting, making way for the mentally taxing challenges that are exponentially multiplying my grey hairs and wrinkles.
On this, our last few days before school starts, we are not cramming in touristy fun or racing to check off lists. Bird and Deal have asked to be lazy and carefree. They know that we shall soon be tethered to a schedule and want to capitalize on having nothing but the day ahead.
We spent part of the day with friends, playing mini golf, romping on the playground, and munching snow cones.
We curled up and read, to each other and to ourselves.
We walked the dog and collected leaves and flowers.
We made solar paper art.
We nibbled on creamy peanut butter pie straight from the pan. We might have used our fingers.
We played baseball, did kung fu, and went snowboarding. On the Wii, of course.
The night ahead promises more laziness and simple pleasures. We might take the dog for another walk. We might go out for ice cream. We might go buy some school supplies to donate. We might play real ball in the yard.
Or we might just sit around, enjoying the luxury of doing nothing.
