Mac Daddy’s birthday is this weekend. We met in our twenties, got married in our thirties, and are embracing our forties. Life is good. Mac Daddy is the kind of man whom everyone adores. It’s not that he’s the garrulous life of the party or the kind of guy who’s in tune with everyone and connects on a mysterious deep level. Mac Daddy is in fact sarcastic as hell, to the point that you’ll be scratching your head wondering when he’s serious and when he’s messing with you. He can be snarky, a trait we share, and sometimes a contrarian.
I realize I’m painting an unflattering portrait of my husband, but let me tell you, he is the most generous, kind man I have ever known. He has a bone dry sense of humor and is full of whip smart comebacks. His laugh consumes his whole body, making his shoulders shake and his cheeks dimple into the kind of fit that makes your face hurt. He is gentle and straight forward and honest in a no bullshit kind of way. There are no sucker punches with this guy. He’s also been to not one, but two Neil Diamond concerts with me and humored me at the Rick Springfield show too.
Mac Daddy makes me feel safe and happy and comfortable. He is my best friend. He loves us fiercely and has no outdated “manly” hangups about showing it. He’s the kind of guy who leaves sweet notes in my suitcase when I go out of town. On a recent trip my girlfriends were texting photos of his note to their husbands, remarking how they missed a golden opportunity. Mac Daddy has been known to have dinner ordered to us at home as a surprise right at the witching hour when he is away on a business trip. Once when he had to be out of town for my birthday he brought home my most favorite fig and duck confit sandwich from a little joint in Charleston. He ordered the sandwich as he left town and packed it on ice to present to me when he arrived home with a few hours of my birthday still left to celebrate. He even dug up a recipe, tracked down fresh duck, and made me duck confit for mother’s day. Do you see what I mean? He’s the real deal.
To celebrate Mac Daddy’s birthday, I created something to cool him down on these hot August nights. While he hails from Wisconsin, he’s a bourbon man. He’s even got a barrel of Maker’s Mark aging just for him in Loretto, Kentucky. He might as well seal every love note with a red wax seal since he’s a Maker’s Mark ambassador.
