Let’s talk about sour mix. Forget the too tart, too treacly sweet stuff found on grocery shelves. Citrus season is upon us so let’s make use of all that juicy goodness. When you make it at home, you control the ingredients so that means no food dye, high fructose corn syrup, or other nastiness. It’s so easy to make sour mix at home, and a jaunty little bottle makes for a cute gift. I like my sour mix with whiskey, but a splash into seltzer water makes for a refreshing treat too.
Sour Mix
1 cup water
1 cup sugar
1/2 cup lemon juice
1/2 lime juice
1/2 cup grapefruit juice
1/2 cup clementine juice (can use orange instead)
Make a simple syrup by boiling the water and sugar. Reduce to a rolling boil and stir to dissolve the sugar. Remove from heat. Once cooled, add citrus juices (Be sure to strain, lest you have a pulpy sour mix!). Give it a gentle stir and pour into a bottle. Refrigerate.
It’s that easy and takes less time than running to the store.
