While our house was gutted and inhabitable during our recent renovation, we stowed our things and moved into a small rental house for the nine-month long project. We had to be selective about what we toted. I brought about an eighth of my kitchen and closet, stuffing the rest into storage. It was like Christmas morning when we finally moved and unpacked all those boxes that had been in storage, nestled like a cardboard version of Tetris. I brought only one cookbook to the rental house, my go-to source for all things food and cooking related: Homemade With Love, by Jennifer Perillo.
You’ve likely seen me swooning over my friend Jennie before. My Twitter feed has been filled with my adoration of Jennie. She’s not only a fantastic cook and hostess, she’s a generous friend whose salty language and sharp wit are a jolting juxtaposition to her antique loving old soul. Jennie has a new project underway, a journal of original recipes called Simple Scratch Cooking. The first issue sold out in less time than it takes for a cake to bake so jump on this opportunity now. You can pre-order the winter issue. Here’s a sampling of a few recipes in the next issue: gruyere and rosemary biscuits (Jennie is coming here for Thanksgiving and better be making these!), slow cooker black eyed peas, and a pomegranate bourbon punch by yours truly.
Now here’s the best part, the part where you see Jennie’s generosity at work. Between now and Thanksgiving, Jennie is donating 10% of the proceeds on all orders of Simple Scratch Cooking to the Inter-Faith Food Shuttle’s Backpack Buddies program. This is the organization we work with through the Cecilia Rawlins Fund to help provide weekend meals for kids at our son’s school. Jennie lives 500 miles away but is graciously supporting a cause she knows I put my heart into. Now that’s something to be thankful for this season.
